Book Overview

As a child growing up in the Victorian countryside, taking a walk with dogs and friends on the weekends, it seemed natural to pick up a stout gumtree stick and arm oneself against the poisonous serpents one sometimes encountered, to be used as a sword against imaginary, unseen threatening foes, or merely to swipe the heads off unsuspecting everlasting daisies. The selection of this implement is an act that I believe reverberates back through time, to the beginnings of man’s ascent to civilisation.
An excellent guide to the multitude of products that plants provide us with to enhance the quality of our lives.

In my research I could see the need for an index to tropical plant medicine.
The book ‘Maladies and Remedies’ addresses the subject of ‘Tropical Herbal Medicine’, and includes native medicines used by the Australian Indigenous people and Early Settlers, and also introduced plants and their application throughout all tropical cultures world-wide.
This encompasses all of the plants in the Australian tropics, native and otherwise, that have been used as medicine. Most Herbals focus on the plants, “Maladies and Remedies” is set-out in chapters, highlighting the ailments, which after all is the cause of a persons enquiry and concern.
I found Maladies and Remedies to be a deeply interesting and informative source of herbal prescribing. It is an eclectic compendium of herbs from around the world and includes lesser known botanitcal medicines from Australia.
Steve Price’s knowledge of botany helps to inform and educate the reader, while the historical use of these wonderful plants makes for fascinating reading. It is a book not only for the Herbalist, but for anyone interested in learning more about the scope and application of Botanical medicine. Highly Recommended!”
